HARWOOD ART CENTER

The Harwood Art Center provides opportunities for youth, adults and artists from New Mexico's diverse communities to create and/or participate in the visual, literary and performing arts. Harwood faces a triple challenge of finding funding to keep our historic building in repair, to support many wonderful projects brought to us by community groups looking for organizational support; and to continue and expand the in-house arts education programs that serve so many people around the city.

Funds from the Quality of Life Initiative would allow us to support programming and projects leave other earned income sources for continued work on the building. Additional funding from Quality of Life funds would mean:

• More opportunities for youth, adults and artists from New Mexico’s diverse communities to create and/or participate in the visual, literary and performing arts.

• Expanding our free after-school art program into additional community centers (besides Wells Park and Barelas) around Albuquerque.

• Help support more community arts events like the National Poetry Slam Championships and the Juried Albuquerque Contemporary Art Show.

• Expanded classes and workshops for kids and adults through the Harwood Art School.

• Ensuring the existence of an annual Carnuel Parade and Fiesta for the Wells Park/Sawmill/Downtown Neighborhoods in an effort to bring recognition and economic development to this area.

• Creating publications for poetry; photography & oral histories; artist & poet biographies, etc. under our Old School Books imprint.

• Supporting programming and projects, which leaves other earned income sources for continued work on the historic Harwood Art Center building, which faces the challenge of finding funding to repair.

• Continuing and expanding the in-house arts education programs that serve so many people around the city.

ALBUQUERQUE BIOLOGICAL PARK

The Albuquerque Biological Park is the Rio Grande Zoo , Albuquerque Aquarium, Rio Grande Botanic Garden, and Tingley Beach. It has hundreds of thousands of visitors every year, many of whom are children on field trips from schools. Among its most popular offerings are the annual “Mothers Day Concert” at the Zoo by the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra, and its spring and summer outdoor concerts featuring a wide variety of music in several venues. A new “train” links its major components and provides a fun ride.

The mission of the Albuquerque Biological Park is to provide the public with exciting recreational opportunities and to foster environmental awareness, education and stewardship.

Additional funding from Quality of Life funds would allow us to:

  • Offer free admission to all organized schools in Bernalillo County

  • Offer free admission to all Bernalillo County certified home schools

  • Expand existing education programs offering for all citizens

  • Present more interactive exhibits - ie: African Dancers, Capitan Lucky, Professor BioPark

  • Create more Aquarium and Botanic Garden programs

  • Underwrite Zoo Music and Summer Nights, and create a $3 ticket for both

  • Better meet its mission.

- Julie Rugg, Executive Director, BioPark Society

The Quality of Life Initiative is a community investment in culture, history, art and science that will pay off almost immediately – and well into the future. It asks the November 2006 General Election voters to approve a 3/16th of 1% increase in the Gross Receipts Tax to create a stream of income for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations to enhance and expand their programs and make them more accessible to more people.
